The final weekend of the season in the Yorkshire League saw both Sheffield sides finish on a positive note with impressive wins.

Collegiate capped a successful season with victory over Appelby Frodingham at Abbeydale while United skipper Paul Cummins helped his side plunder the points at Hull.

Appleby Frodingham won the toss and their decision to bowl was vindicated when Collegiate fell to 22-3 with Gaywood, Patmore and Billy Root all dismissed cheaply. McKenna and Lister halted the slide and gave the innings some stability.

Lister went for 29 but with support from Fisher, 22 and a late burst from Shutt, 19, McKenna’s patient and well compiled 71 formed the backbone of a final total of 179-9 from the full 55 overs. Opening bowler Hilton picked up 5-40 for the visitors.

In reply, Pete Turnbull took two early wickets and although the middle order fought hard, Collegiate chipped away steadily before a flurry of wickets saw the vistors tumble from 89-4 to 99-9. Some late order hitting gave the scoreboard some respectability as Frodingham were all out for 140. Turnbull finished with 3-47, while Root, Street and Dixon each took two wickets.

United’s trip to Hull saw them win the toss yet again and put their hosts in. United’s bowlers wasted no time in making full use of the conditions, Adam Thorpe reducing Hull to 38-6 with some excellent seam bowling. Opener Grey found some support in Parker and some lower order hitting from skipper Barrick gave United a target to chase as the home side finished on 122 all out. Thorpe ended on a high with his team’s season’s best figures of 7-28.

United were also made to struggle as they dipped to 33-3. Skipper Paul Cummins was still there however and having found a willing partner to provide much-needed support in Dean Smith, started to get on top of the game.

However Cummins demise for 51 with the score at 89-5 meant the game was not over but Smith and Grant Johnson, both with 22, got the Bawtry Road side over the line at 124-6.

Final table: York CC 158, Rotherham Town CC 134, Cleethorpes 122, YACA 118, Collegiate 113, Scarborough 107, Castleford 102, Barnsley 92, Harrogate 90, Appleby Frodingham 87, United 63, Driffield Town 54, Hull 41, Doncaster Town 36.
