Sheffield Steelers went to the top of the league last night after a 2-0 win at Braehead Clan.

Steelers had started off the night in third position in the league, just underneath the Clan, who led them by a point.

They scored twice in a five minute period around the half hour mark, while goalie Frank Doyle broke the Bravehearts with a shut out.

Tyler Mosienko and Stefan Meyer - who could have been team-mates at Sheffield this year - came close at either end in the early stages, while Steelers’ D-man Cullen Eddy roamed forward to create chances.

Mathieu Roy, Steelers top points scorer, had a chance to beat goalie Kyle Jones, but couldn’t hit the target.

And debutant import Danny Bois, filling the number 51 shirt, missed another opportunity, while Jones’ body stopped a Rob Dowd effort.

At the other end, Braehead’s top points scorer Neil Trim was on the end of a nice hit from Rod Sarich. Clan had the edge, outshooting Steelers by almost double in the first 20 minutes.

Bois had a moment to remember in his first UK match - but not a good one as he was floored by Zack Fitzgerald in an n exchange in which he seemed unwilling to take part. Bois looked decidedly concussed afterwards.

But at the half way point, Sarich’s shot cannoned off Jones, falling nicely to Roy to put Sheffield 1-0 ahead on the Power Play.

Five minutes later, Gord Baldwin’s blue line shot was neatly tipped by Colton Fretter for 2-0 to ensure comprehensive middle session superiority.

While Derek Roehl thought he’d got one back, on-form Doyle thwarted him with an exquisite save.

Mike Forney rushed a chance to put the game completely out of the Scots’ reach but defensively Steelers gave little in the way of high-grade chances away.

Steelers who have games in hand over most teams in the division, will monitor the injuries of Bois and Phil Hill, who hurt his leg near the end.

They play again at Braehead Arena tonight before hosting Coventry Blaze on Sunday.
