Sheffield Steelers: Jason Hewitt relishes new campaign ahead

Jason Hewitt had plenty of reasons to appreciate Paul Thompson’s appointment as coach at Steelers.

The rumour inside the Sheffield camp had been that the forward’s time at the club would have come to an end this Summer, had Gerad Adams retained his job at the helm.

But Thompson handed the ‘British Bulldog’ another contract, which means his full testimonial programme can go ahead.

“I’d heard rumours that I would have lost my job under ‘G,’,if that had have been the case it would have been his right” said ‘Hewy.’

“But that doesn’t make me doubt myself for a minute. I played with injury (knee and ankle) for much of last year but that’s cleared up now and I’ll be completely fit when the action starts again.”

Hewitt was surprised at the amount of new players coming in, despite the side winning the League last year. “There was always going to be more changes with a new coach than there would have been under an old one” said Hewitt.

“But I’ve been in the game long enough to see whole teams turned around.”

The forward will relish the Champions League fixtures, although few people give Sheffield a chance against crack opposition. “It’s great that our club can represent our country. Some of our younger guys can put themselves out there on such a stage.

“The format is better this year, Nottingham Panthers seemed to play a lot of games and had a load of travelling to do, but we won’t have as much of that.”

* Sheffield Steelers will play a friendly at Manchester Storm on Tuesday, September 2.
