Sheffield Tigers head coach Dan Richmond is adamant some words of wisdom midweek made all the different before his side snatched victory against Harrogate.
Tigers won just one of their 11 SSE National League Two North clashes before beating their Yorks rivals 17-6.
Richmond dished out a few home truths in training last week. And he feels the clear-the-air talks made all the difference.
“The whole pack did a fantastic job, it would be unfair to single any of them out,” said Richmond. “What might have been the catalyst this week was my challenge to the senior players at the club on why they play rugby and what it means to represent your club. Against Harrogate there was a clear five or six per cent extra of drive from everybody and you could see that they really wanted to work for each other.
“Scoring a try in injury time was down to that. It was a fantastic, committed performance that we can really build on.”
The win moved them on to 11 points, six ahead of basement boys Dudley Kingswinford.
With third-from-bottom Hull now just two points ahead Richmond believes the only way is up for his troops.
“It was a very, very close game as the score reflects,” he added. “I was really pleased with the way the team executed the game plan.
“We knew that Harrogate we capable of scoring a lot of tries. We forced them to defend and we got our rewards for that.
“There were some well worked tries for us too and we made sure we looked after the ball knowing that would take its toll of them in the closing stages which proved to be the case.”
