Team spirit has played a major part in Sheffield Tigers push for a top three place in the Premier League, according to Ashley Birks.
He said: “The lads get on great and we all want to do well, we will continue to do what we can to finish as high as we can in the remaining weeks of the season.”
Birks has also revealed how winning races in the National League has boosted his confidence with Tigers. He has been piling up the points for the combined Scunthorpe and Sheffield team in the third tier and has formed a good partnership with Simon Lambert in the Owlerton reserve positions.
“I’ve really enjoyed this season and I think winning races in the National League has been good for me.
“I know what I can do, I really feel I can beat some of the top riders in the Premier League and that’s what I’ll continue to do for the rest of the season.”
Away from speedway, Birks likes to relax with his BMX bike when he spends time with brother Jonathan and Great Britain international Tai Woffinden.
“It’s great because it lets you forget about the speedway and I like to do that from time to time because there is a lot of pressure involved in becoming a top rider. I like the BMX bike and I like Cycle Speedway as well, it’s nice to be able to do that” he added.
Tigers were edged out by six points at Berwick but grabbed that all-important bonus point to maintain their second place in the Premier League. They host Newcastle Diamonds tonight (7.45pm).
