Can Shane play his cards right?

Vegas bid: Shane Parker
Vegas bid: Shane Parker

THE stakes are pretty high for Tigers hero Shane Parker this weekend.

For the Aussie has a big date away from organising his farewell meeting on March 18 when he competes in the Midlands regional finals of his local pub’s poker league!

Parker, who was a big hit with Sheffield fans last season, qualified through his pub and could be in with a chance of joining the highest of high rollers in Las Vegas.

“I’ve been playing for about four years I guess,” he explained. “I started back in Aussie with my mates, then played in a pub league. I joined one over here, the season lasts three months and then the top two from each pub qualify for the regional finals.

“I’m quite excited about Saturday, looking forward to it. If I make the final table there’s the national finals and then a trip to Vegas.

“If it’s a flop on Saturday, I’ve got the Veteran Speedway Riders’ do to cheer me up in the evening!”

Parker completed the line-up for his farewell meeting a few weeks back and is now just hoping the weather will be kind to him.

“We opted for this time of year, even though I know the weather can be dodgy, because all the riders are keen and raring to go,” he said.

“The response from them to my meeting has been great, I’m wrapped with the line-up.

“And we’ll be doing everything possible to make sure the meeting goes ahead, even going up there the night before if necessary to cover the track.”

World Champions Greg Hancock and Maciej Janowski head the field which is completed by Chris Holder, Peter Karlsson, Darcy Ward, Davey Watt, Freddie Lindgren, Scott Nicholls, Tai Woffinden, Rory Schlein, Niels- Kristian Iversen, Kenneth Bjerre, Rene Bach, Joe Screen, Linus Sundstrom and Kevin Wolbert. Gates open at 3.45pm with tapes up at 5pm.
