Ipswich 44 Sheffield Tigers 49: Quickfire double for super Tigers

Super Sheffield stunned Ipswich as they raced to a spectacular 49-44 Bank Holiday victory over Ipswich at Foxhall.

Just four days after defeating the Witches in a closely-fought encounter at Owlerton, Tigers again prevailed to complete a memorable double over the East Anglian outfit and add three points to their Premier League tally. It was another battling all-around team performance from Jack Lee’s side to move them back to the top of the table, albeit having ridden several more meetings than most sides.

The visitors got off to a perfect start as they capitalised upon bike troubles for Danny King and Stefan Nielsen respectively in the opening two races to strike back-to- back maximums. Having instantly put themselves on the front foot, Ty Proctor and Ashley Birks made the most of an exclusion for Rohan Tungate in heat seven to strike a third Tigers maximum and put them ten clear.

Despite the Witches fighting valiantly to get back on terms, Sheffield demonstrated plenty of grit and determination to hold on for a surprise win. The flying Andre Compton held off Cameron Heeps by the narrowest of margins in heat eight to preserve their advantage whilst Proctor brilliantly snatched second place from Nielsen on the run to the line in a scintillating heat 10 to prevent an Ipswich 5-1.

Compton and guesting No.1 Nick Morris then gave Sheffield a huge maximum of their own in heat 11 – and although Ipswich hit back through a tactical ride in the next race the Tigers held on.

Sheffield resume their League Cup campaign at Redcar tonight.

IPSWICH 44: Nico Covatti 18, Danny King 9, Cameron Heeps 5, Rohan Tungate 5, Stefan Nielsen 4, Ritchie Hawkins 3+1, Gino Manzares R/R.
