Sheffield’s Nick Matthew has continued his good form after winning the World Championship earlier this month by making good progress at the Qatar Classic in Doha.

The 33-year-old beat Amr Shabana yesterday in the quarter-finals after the Egyptian pulled out midway through their tie to set up a semi-final against Spain’s Borja Golan who beat Greg Gaultier of France 7/11, 12/10, 11/6, 15/13.

Matthew had a tough first round draw against World No 15 Alister Walker of Botswana but he came through in straight games 11/8, 11/7, 12/10 in 42 minutes. And on Tuesday evening he beat Columbia’s Miguel Angel Rodriguez 11/6, 11/7, 13/11 in 54 minutes.

Matthew will be playing a charity match for NSPCC’s GO Green Day next Wednesday at Hallamshire Tennis and Squash Club. Email info@hallamshire.net for details.
