Steeldogs run Steelers close

Sheffield Steeldogs gave their more illustrious neighbours Sheffield Steelers something to think about in the friendly derby at iceSheffield.

In the end the honours went to Steelers 4-3, but it was a less than convinvincing performance by the Premier League champions and coach Ryan Finnerty will look to cut out his team’s sloppiness for the home league clash against Dundee on Saturday.

The Elite League Steeldogs bridged the gap in the opening exchanges but were then hit by a two goal salvo inside a minute from Jeff Legue and Tom Squires.

Eye-catching Latvian forward Janis Ozolins reduced the deficit and they levelled it up in the middle period courtesy of a superb roofed shot from Edgars Bebris.

Steeldogs then took the lead as Scott Morris nipped in to score as Ozolins wound up the Steelers defence, a lead they maintained into the start of the third period. A gifted powerplay for the Steelers allowed Ashley Tait to equalise and Jason Hewitt finally clinched the winner at 54:08. Man of the Match awards went to Ozolins for the Steeldogs and Steelers Steve Birnstill.

Steeldogs face an iceSheffield battle for the War of the Roses Cup against Tony Hand’s Manchester Phoenix on Saturday, September 17 (7.30pm).
