Swimming: City star makes GB cut for worlds

City of Sheffield swimmer Ellie Faulkner has been selected in the Great Britain team for the World Championships in Barcelona after a series of impressive performances in the British Swimming Championships in Sheffield last week.

Faulkner finished second in the final of the 400m freestyle on Sunday and 800m earlier last week and also won the 200m but was outside the qualifying time in that event.

Liam Tancock will not be defending his 50 metres backstroke title in the worlds after he failed to make the cut. Tancock had been under threat after the trials in Sheffield which saw him finish second in both the 50m and 100m events and his name was not among the 27 announced yesterday for next month’s pool competition.

Michael Jamieson is the sole Olympic medallist on the team following the retirement of Rebecca Adlington and with men making up 16 of the squad, there has been a feeling of the changing of the guard after a period of success by British women.

Jazmin Carlin will travel to Spain a year after missing out on Olympic selection following recurrent illness.
