Tennis: Marray casts an eye over Sheffield’s tennis best

THERE could have been no more appropriate venue for the Sheffield and District Tennis Championships to be staged this week than at Jonny Marray’s home club, Hallamshire Tennis club.

The Hunters Bar club happens to be the regular venue for this tournament which attracts singles and dobules players from clubs across the city all striving to become Sheffield champions.

And there could not possibly have been a more popular visitor than the man himself when Jonny, back in Sheffield yesterday after the most amazing fortnight of his life, popped into the Hallamshire club last night.

Marray’s amazing men’s doubles success at Wimbledon on Saturday night with playing partner Freddie Nielsen of Denmark meant everyone was buzzing when the contestants, officials and supporters arrived first thing on Sunday morning for the opening rounds of this long-standing tournament, now in its 92nd year.

The championships, sponsored by Deuce UK, got underway at 10am and it was some 11 and a half hours later, 9.30 on Sunday evening with the light fading, that the final matches in the opening rounds were concluded. The tournament continues for the rest of this week with Finals Day on Saturday.
