Titles up for grabs on last day

IT’S Finals Day today for the Sheffield and District Tennis Championships of which Wimbledon champion Jonny Marray is a past winner.

They are staged at his home club, Hallamshire (start at 2pm). In the men’s singles, Graves have two semi-finalists in Daniel Lea and James Riley.

Lea beat Sam Salt (Ecclesall) 6-2, 6-3 while Riley saw off Kevin Folger (Abbeydale) 6-2, 6-1. The other quarter-finals saw Chris Duffy (Brentwood) beat Jamie Bennett (Grove) 6-1, 7-5, while Richard Furness (Ecclesall) was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Chris Bagnall (Hallam Grange).

In the ladies’ singles, Bamford’s Louise Holtum moved into the final beating Amy Harris (Chesterfield) 6-2, 6-0. Lucy Wright (Wheatley Hills) claimed a semi-final spot with a 6-1, 6-0 beating of Ruth Johnson (Hallamshire).

In the handicap singles semis, Karl Green (Bradfield) beat Russell Bluff (Beauchief) 6-4 5-7 6-3 and Stephen Gilmour (Ecclesall) beat Christos Liaskos (Grove) 6-3 6-2.
