Yorkshire get Bairstow boost, but will miss Joe

Table-topping Yorkshire were handed an unexpected boost yesterday when Jonny Bairstow was cleared to play in their crucial County Championship game against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Bairstow was axed from the England side for the final Ashes test match against Australia at The Oval, and instead made the journey to Nottingham to play for his county as they continue their quest for the Division One title.

Bairstow replaced Andrew Hodd in the Yorkshire line up.

Yorkshire’s hopes of having Joe Root available for selection before the end of the summer, meanwhile, were dealt a blow when the 22-year-old opening batsman was called up to the England Twenty20 squad.

Root was added to the original 13-man squad to face Australia, on August 29 and 31.

Those dates coincide with Yorkshire’s clash with Durham, at Scarborough.
