Return Sheffield trip for folk duo Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman
A popular folk duo return to the Greystones next Wednesday (April 24).
Dartmoor-based husband and wife team Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman have twice won the coveted Best Duo title at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards (2016 and 2013), consistently delivering assured, distinctive live and recorded performances.
Over two decades of performance they have always been bold and innovative, mixing traditional song arrangements with (increasingly) their self-penned material.
Their publicity describes their sound as moving from “the bitter to the sweet, the wry to the sad, the political to the passive, across folk, rock, country and blues genres”.
Comedy mixes with music when Taskmaster star Alex Horne brings his Horne Section to the City Hall Ballroom on Tuesday (April 23).
There’s all manner of music-inspired daftness featuring the comedian who created the huge hit TV show on TV comedy channel Dave and the five-piece band. They have appeared on their own programme on Dave .
This is how they describe the show: “The Horne Section combine music and comedy in a typically unpredictable way, blending stupid songs with a carnival atmosphere and plenty of puns.
“Expect a mixture of toe-tapping tunes, exceptional musicality and five talented musicians being made to do silly things by a bearded comedian.”
Danish musician Ida Wenoe visits Sheffield tonight, Thursday (April 18) to promote the release of her second album, The Things We Don’t Know Yet, which has just come out on Integrity Records.
Her music is described as “blending her Nordic Noir heritage with hints of Americana and English folk".
Fans include BBC 6 Music DJs Tom Ravenscroft, Marc Riley and Gideon Coe.
She’s playing at Cafe #9 on Nether Edge Road at 7.30pm.
