The Orchestre National de Lille (ONDL) will be the only French orchestra to tour the UK this year.

Sheffield International Concert Season marketing officer Alex Burns said: “This popular French orchestra presents a dynamic collective of musicians ready to wow UK audiences.

“Pair this with their authentic French programme; this cross-Channel tour is set to be an explosion of French flair.”

Bringing a varied and colourful programme of mostly French classical music, the concert will also see the ONDL pay homage to Beethoven in his 250th anniversary year.

Their esteemed musical director Alexandre Bloch leads the orchestra on his first tour with the ONDL.

Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto at the heart of the programme, said Alex.

She added: “A work that is both lyrical and humorous, the concerto encapsulates all that is celebrated about the great composer in his anniversary year.

“Joining the ONDL to perform the work is the ‘young prodigy of the piano, Eric Lu. After winning the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition in 2018, Eric Lu has continued to wow audiences around the world.

“He won the Leeds Competition with the same work he is performing on this tour, so a real treat will be in store for Sheffield audiences.”

Opening the concert will be Ravel’s nostalgic and fairy tale-inspired Mother Goose Suite, followed by Debussy’s alluring Images: Ibéria.

After the interval Eric will join the ONDL to perform the Beethoven . The final piece is Ravel’s La Valse.

A pre-concert talk with BBC broadcaster Trisha Cooper starts at 6pm.
