There’s a sparkling summer ahead at Grimm & Co, the stunning ‘literary apothecary’ on Rotherham’s high street which aims to inspire children and show them the importance of exercising their imaginations.

The charity is hosting a magical event called Sparkles and Sorcery on 25 July where gemmologist (firstly, who knew that was a real job? And secondly, why aren’t I doing it too?)

Helen Dimmick will be talking about gems and the myths and legends associated with them.

You can go along, relax with tasty nibbles including the appetising eyeballs, snake legs and tail of newt, as well as specially selected wines, to learn about the stories behind your favourite jewels.

You will also be entertained by the resident Grimm & Co wizard, and get your hands on unique literary works from local children.

All proceeds from the event will support the work of the charity with children from Rotherham

and across Yorkshire.

Boasting famous patrons from author Joanne Harris, to Sir Bob Geldof, to The League Of

Gentlemen’s Jeremy Dyson, Grimm and Co was borne out of a Sheffield University study

into creative literacy.

Not only does the apothecary do great work with their confidence and creativity building writing workshops, they have also proved to be a successful tourist attraction. The literary apothecary has been shortlisted as a finalist for a White Rose Award, the awards run by Welcome to Yorkshire that recognise the very best of the county’s tourism industry. They are going up against the best in Yorkshire in the Small Attraction of the Year category.

Teachers can now book their classes in for the 2018/19 academic year. Slots are available for the immersive, exciting and interactive morning-long writing workshops. The charity runs a variety of workshops for KS2 and KS3 students on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, with capacity to welcome classes of up to 30 pupils.

The aim is to ignite imaginations, build creative writing skills, develop confidence in writing

and to motivate children and young people to put pen to paper, and the activities result in a beautiful, authentic end product for each pupil to take home with them.

The Sparkles and Sorcery event is at Grimm & Co, 2 Doncaster Gate, Rotherham S65 1DJ,

on 25 July from 7-9pm.
