Literary City: Off The Shelf
You may already know Matt Coyne without knowing his name. He is Man vs Baby, a blogger
and writer who famously described his precious new baby son on social media as ‘a furious,
sleep-murdering, unstable and incontinent, breasts-obsessed midget lodger’.
Man vs Baby all began when Coyne’s messages to his wife on the day she went back to
work after maternity leave went viral: he sent her pictures of him and the baby in the pub, at
an ‘adult’ bar, out skydiving, and baby Charlie being shot out of a cannon. Now his stories of
fatherhood on facebook are followed by over two hundred thousand people.
Coyne was born and raised in Sheffield, and his upcoming event at Off The Shelf promises
to be one of the highlights of the festival. Coyne, who now lives in Barnsley, will be talking
about his Sunday Times bestselling book, Dummy.
A parenting book with a difference, Dummy is full of impractical, hands on advice for the
inept mum or dad - stuff you just won’t find in any baby manual or guide: ‘Profanity Bingo’ for
labour; a categorisation of various nappy disasters, and how to counteract the baby plank
manoeuvre. Phillip Schofield described it as: “Very, very funny.”
Coyne appears at Off The Shelf on 14 October at the University of Sheffield Students’ Union.
