What a time to drink wine. Glorious summer days in the garden are enhanced by just the right bottle, and here some options are put to the test.
n KVW Walker Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2017, £8.50,Morrisons
A surprise package: very light, pale and with a touch of zesty fruit behind it. An absolutely ideal companion for the summer back garden barbecue.
n Esk Valley Hawkes Bay Verdelho 2017, £13.75, The Wine Reserve
This was originally made from grapes from Madeira used to make fortified wines. The first sip is reminiscent of fruit salad. The flavours are rich, a mix of grape with pear, and peachy sweet, but this is a dry wine so not too syrupy. It is delightfully refreshing with grapefruit like acidity giving a light fizz.
n Villa Maria Rosé 2017, £10.75, Asda
This classy rose is so pale it is almost white, and when well chilled flows down alarmingly quickly. It’s dry without any dominant notes, just hints of strawberry. Take it on a park picnic.
n Louis Jadot Beaujolais Villages 2016, Tesco, £11.70
Red, in summer?
Yes, this juicy, less heavyweight option from a reliable vineyard can be lightly chilled, but we prefer it as it is, to cool down a spicy meat feast, or enjoy solo. Close your eyes, taste the raspberry and cherry, and pretend you are on holiday in France.
n Wente Morning Fog Chardonnay 2016, 99wines.co.uk, £ 15.49
One to wheel out to impress guests.
This fresh, modern chardonnay reminded us of melons, with a creamy finish.
n Walker Bay, Shiraz, Morrison’s, £7.50
This lively customer is ideal for alfresco cooking with fruity flavours which will complement most dishes. It also has a decent plummy finish, meaning it can contend with all the sauces, dips and dressings a barbecue offers. A good value buy.
n Zalze Bush Vine Chenin Blanc 2017, £10.00, Waitrose
This fresh and easy-drinking white would be a great accompaniment for pasta and seafood dishes.
It has a zesty punch with hints of tropical fruits.
n Señorio de Sarria Rosado, Navarra 2017,£6.75 bottle or £81 dozen, The Wine Society
Vivid pink in colour, this Spanish rose is reminiscent of holidays witha friendly bouquet of quite intense fruits.
