Songs and sparkle at Three Degrees prepare for Chesterfield show

Soul legends The Three Degrees are back on tour – celebrating more than 50 years in the business with all their golden oldies, glamorous dresses and lots of sparkle.

Hits When Will I See You Again, Take Good Care Of Yourself, Woman In Love and My Simple Heart are among the classics which ensured their place in the Guinness World Records as the longest-running female vocal group in history.

There have been 15 different women in the trio over the years. V

alerie Holiday and Helen Scott, who have been around for all the hits, are now joined by ‘new’ girl Freddi Pool – a member since 2011.

Valerie says: “Like any job, an employee leaves and you have to find somebody else.

“Freddi has a strong, powerful voice. She’s a beautiful, friendly young woman, so her personality slotted in perfectly with Helen and I.

“We’ll be performing all our greatest hits – we have quite a show.

“We still get excited wearing those glamorous dresses – we like to sparkle.

“By the time we get to the end, everybody is dancing.”

Valerie believes the secret for their long lasting success is the uplifting appeal of the songs they sing.

She says: “I think it has to do with the lyrics. Most of the songs we sing are happy and uplifting, with positive messages.”

Of chart-topping hit When Will I See You Again she says: “It was a Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff creation. It just suited us.because when you are constantly moving and leaving behind people that you hold dear, you are always asking that question.

“So it’s like an everyday statement.

“It felt fantastic when it went to number one.

“We were in Japan performing at the third Tokyo Music Festival when they called to let us know it had hit number one in the United States.

“It was a feeling of joy because we had been looking forward to having that record.”

The Three Degrees are performing at The Winding Wheel, Chesterfield, on Monday, from 7.30pm.
