Forget Madison Square Gardens, Wembley Arena and The MGM Grand in Las Vegas – they do not come close to the pulling power of Sheffield’s own Motorpoint Arena.
The city’s 22-year-old venue was today acknowledged as one of the world’s top venues for ticket sales.
It has been ranked number 11 in the world in the Pollstar Magazine 2012 Year End Worldwide Ticket Sales Top 200 Venue List, after selling more than half a million tickets last year.
Rob O’Shea, arena general manager, said “We are proud to be recognised as a top 200 venue in the world, not least to be ranked 11th.
“This recognition showcases to the entertainment industry that Sheffield is a viable and successful market for entertainment.”
The Attercliffe venue – which hosts a range of events from major concerts to comedy, sport to theatre, family shows to exhibitions and conferences – sold 518,405 tickets in 2012.
That puts it right up there alongside the likes of the Staples Centre, in Los Angeles and Berlin’s O2 World – top was The O2 London, with 1.57 million sales.
New York’s iconic Madison Square Gardens Arena trails the Motorpoint with 453,894 tickets sold, ahead of Wembley Arena with 355,435 and the MGM Grand Garden Arena with 94,127. Sheffield’s arena, which has just undergone a multi-million pound revamp, has the biggest capacity in the region at 13,600 – 100 more than then new £80m Leeds Arena.
The venue, which brings in an estimated £20 million a year to Sheffield’s economy, has hosted more than 2,700 events over the years, seen by more than 14.5 million people, averaging 122 performances annually.
Sheffield Steelers also play their home ice hockey games there.
