VIDEO: Pledge to sing on Philippa Hanna’s album

FAN power is helping Sheffield’s singer songwriter Philippa Hanna hit the big time – with supporters pledging cash for unique opportunities, including the chance to sing on her next album, writes Graham Walker.

That would cost you £100.

But you can help make her dreams come true, with much needed funding towards her next album, by pledging from as little as £10 - which will get you a signed copy of it, called Through The Woods.

Pledge £500 and the 28-year-old, who recently wowed arena audiences as Lionel Richie’s support act, will perform a concert just for you on her upcoming national tour.

And for £1,000 you can even write and record a song with Philippa, who is working with the city’s Grammy award winning producer Eliot Kennedy at The Foundry, a brand new extension to his world famous studio, The Steelworks.

But the clock is ticking.

Philippa, of Handsworth, already has 97 backers, pledging a current total of £3,641. But she must meet her pledge target of £10,000 by Tuesday, February 12 - or the pledges don’t have to be honoured.

Philippa, who started out playing coffee shops and church halls, was plucked from virtual obscurity to take the spotlight on music legend Lionel Richie’s 11 date UK tour, which included a date in front of 10,000 people at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena.

It’s resulted in more new fans than ever and her bid to record a new album.

Lighthouse, one of the tracks, has already been getting Radio 2 air play and she performed it earlier this month on BBC1’s Songs of Praise.

“We need £10,000 to help market the album and take it to the next level. But if I don’t hit the pledge target the Kickstarter project ends and it would be like waving goodbye to the pledges. But I’m hoping and praying people will give me their support,’’ she told The Star.

“Artistes have to be creative these days to get a record made. I don’t have a record label at this stage to market the album I’m making, so we’re counting on loyal fans and friends to help us to take things to the next level.

“In return, I’m offering all kinds of unique things, ranging from signed CDs to gigs, vocal lessons and even giving people the chance to perform on the album.

“The financial backing will not only help us complete the album but open doors to new audiences.”

Philippa, dressed in a Red Riding Hood style cloak for the fantasy art work for Through The Woods, describes the album - due out on April 8 - as a Twilight inspired collection of her own songs. Now she’s hoping for a fairytale ending.

She said: “I’d describe Through The Woods as a whimsical, folk inspired adventure, a mysterious journey into the unknown and out into daylight on the other side. There are lots of hints towards famous folk tales with themes of poisoned apples, kings and princes, cherry coloured coats and sailors lost at sea. I’ve always loved story time and this is my own collection of tales.”
