Music legend Nile Rodgers and his disco funk outfit CHIC are back with their first single in 23 years and a six date UK tour - we’ve got tickets to be won, writes Graham Walker.
The guitar wizard and his disco funk outfit, arguably the greatest dance band in the world, release I’ll Be There on Friday, March 20.
Album It’s About Time follows in June.
UK live dates - full tour details below - include Leeds O2 Academy, on Sunday, March 22. Tickets are £45.
Visit www.o2academyleeds.co.uk or call 0113 389 1555.
Under 14s must be accompanied by an adult and purchase seats in the circle balcony. Minimum age is eight. Under 25s require ID to purchase alcohol.
The I’ll Be There tour will start at the Roundhouse in London on March 20 and 21 - co-inciding with the release of the single on the same day and time of the solar eclipse.
It is also the vernal equinox – when day and night are of equal length and Nile chose London because it is where they set Greenwich Mean Time.
The tour then moves to the O2 Academy in Leeds, March 22, O2 Academy Glasgow, March 23, O2 Apollo Manchester, March 24, then O2 Academy Birmingham, March 25.
CHIC’s sound is undoubtedly defined by the rhythm guitar and musicianship of Rodgers and his late great CHIC bass player Bernard Edwards, resulting in some of the biggest dance singles of all time including Le Freak, He’s The Greatest Dancer and Good Times.
The sound also created a template for funk, dance and even hip hop.
Rodgers has gone on to collaborate with some of the world’s biggest stars including Madonna, David Bowie, Duran Duran, more recently Daft Punk - with whom he picked up three Grammy Awards in 2014, Pharrell Williams, Aviici and Disclosure.
They will also support Kylie Minogue at British Summer Time Hyde Park on June 21.
He said: “Our fans in the UK are some of the greatest in the world so we’re really excited to be coming over to play live shows.
“We headlined a couple of festivals last summer but it’s great to be able to see more of the UK this time around – see you there!”
