A medical specialist living in Doncaster is finally turning his lifelong dream into reality as he brings his very own musical extravaganza to a local stage.
Dr Kumard, aged 52, an Orthopaedic surgeon, is the driving force behind this heart-warming production which has been seven years in the planning.
Originally from coastal town Vizag, in India, his musical journey started 22 years ago after taking inspiration from an Oprah Winfrey quote - “Passion is energy - feel the power that comes from focussing on what excites you.”
Told in English, the colourful show brings together a vibrant, foot tapping, high energy Indian spectacle that promises to be a feast for the senses.
it aims to deliver a fusion of Indian dance and western theatre, in a bid to inspire audiences through Indian dance forms whilst sparking curiosity and educating theatregoers to the 5000 year history of the country in a two hour performance, encapsulating the story through song, dance, an eclectic array of music and drama.
Dr Kumar said: “Having worked hard for a career in medicine and gaining my consultant status in Orthopaedics, I looked for a new challenge, a creative journey if you like.
“In the beginning it was just an idea, a thought, a dream - with no previous experience I never thought it would ever come to fruition.
“From the first notes taken down in a notepad to sourcing the best team to help me with this project, the dancers, set designers, music composers and choreographers, it has been an exciting and rewarding journey and one that I can’t wait to see up on the stage, performed for the regions theatre goers - it will be an immensely proud moment.
“I’ve had immense support from friends and family along the way and if it hadn’t been for that support network, Indika may never have been born.
“My journey proves that if you dream it, you really can achieve it. I hope that the audience loves the show as much as the team and I do and find it moving yet educational and funny - it really does offer something for everyone.”
