We’ve since been absolutely overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and kind words from the people of Sheffield. It means so much to everyone who works at the cinema to know that the city values the venue, and the work that we do, so deeply.

It’s this support that enables us to keep doing what we do, and to continue to offer a diverse range of the best new mainstream, independent and foreign language cinema, as well as special one-off events and film seasons – for the whole of the city.

Next week is of course no exception. Next Tuesday we’re excited to be welcoming ultramarathon runner Nicky Spinks to the cinema for a special Q&A session after a screening of the hilarious documentary The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats its Young.

For the uninitiated, the Barkley Marathons is perhaps the mostnotorious race in the history of ultramarathon running.

The insanely difficult challenge consists of five 20-mile loops, totalling 100 miles across unforgiving Tennessee wilderness, and with an elevation gain equal to that of climbing Mount Everest, twice. All this and oh, you must complete the race in under 60 hours. Good luck!

This doc itself focuses on the colourful and intensely driven competitors who took part in the 2012 edition of the race. It takes a humorous and insightful look at a running mad community pursuing a goal most of us would consider beyond the realms of sanity.

An extraordinary athlete, Spinks, 52, is a long distance fell runner and farmer now based in Yorkshire. She began running competitively in 2001 and has gone on to smash record after record in the world of long distance running.

She currently holds the overall record for the double Bob Graham round, a fell running challenge in the Lake District in which you must traverse 42 fells – twice – in under 48 hours.

Spinks also competed in the Barkley Marathons this year, and was one of the last women standing in a race that nobody managed to finish.

We’re honoured that Spinks will be present on the 23 rd to talk about her running career so far, and her experiences attempting the Barkley this year.

Running Mad: The Barkley Marathons + Q&A with Nicky Spinks is at the Showroom Cinema on Tuesday the 23 rd July at 6pm. o book tickets, please visit: https://www.showroomworkstation.org.uk/barkley-marathons
