A Sheffield youth theatre group have chosen the very apt setting of the Winter Garden for their production of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Into The Woods.
Following their successful production of A Chorus Line at the Yellow Arch Studios last year, Easy Street Theatre Company’s elite section have set their sights on another ambitious production.
With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine, Into The Woods combines the plots of several Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales, exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests.
The action is tied together by a story involving a childless baker and his wife, desperate to start a family after being cursed by a witch.
Along the way the audience meets Red Riding Hood and her wolf, Jack and the Beanstalk and the giant, Rapunzel, Cinderella and a couple of princes.
Founded in 2009, Easy Street Theatre Company aims to offer Sheffield’s young creative talent professional grade theatrical training.
Each year the company performs two large budget shows.
Previous shows include Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Miserables School Edition, Footloose, West Side Story and most recently Sister Act and A Chorus Line.
They also produce smaller shows and pantomimes throughout the year.
The group’s junior company are aged six to 11, the senior company are aged 11 to 21 and the elite company is made up of the most committed, positive and professional senior members who perform more difficult pieces in alternative venues.
