A RECRUITMENT drive is being launched for Sheffield People’s Theatre, a new community theatre company being founded as part of the Crucible’s 40th birthday celebrations.

Sheffield Theatres will hold open auditions on the first three Saturdays in July at the theatre for anyone aged 12+ interested in performing and working backstage on its inaugural production, Lives in Art.

No previous experience is necessary to be part of the new company, just a passion for performing and telling stories through live theatre. Auditions will be split into three age groups – 12 to 14, 15 to 17 and 18+ as well as one mixed-age session. Auditionees do not need to prepare anything in advance of the day.

The first project for the enthusiastic company of 50 performers, Lives in Art, will form the centrepiece of the Crucible’s 40th birthday events this November. Conceived and directed by Sheffield Theatres’ creative producer Andrew Loretto, and written by Sheffield-based writer Richard Hurford, Lives in Art will place the local community at the heart of the theatre’s work this autumn.

Sheffield People’s Theatre is also open to applications from local people aged 16+ interested in lighting, sound, design, stage management and directing to become part of the company. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in working behind the scenes to learn more about their craft from industry professionals.

Andrew Loretto said: “This brand new company will help to cement the relationship between the theatre and the local community. Lives in Art will be the company’s first major production, although we will go on to produce at least one piece for the stage each year as well as working on special one-off projects and collaborations. Recent events such as the Sheffield Sizzler and Theatre Skills workshops prove that there is a wealth of talented people from all over Sheffield who are keen to make exciting new theatre and performance. I look forward to meeting a real mix of people, young and old, during the audition process.”

Ali Fowler, Sheffield Theatres Administrative Producer said ‘After the phenomenal success of last year’s Peter Pan and the fantastic work of the junior ensemble, we are once again on the look out for more equally brilliant local talent. This is an amazing opportunity for those wanting professional stage experience in one of the country’s leading theatre complexes. We are sure there are some extraordinary performers out there in Yorkshire!’
