City arts organisations are celebrating after receiving a £9.6 million funding boost from Arts Council England.

The money will be shared between nine organisations over a three-year period.

Those to benefit are Sheffield Theatres, Museums Sheffield, Site Gallery, Forced Entertainment, Eclipse Theatre, Greentop Community Circus Theatre, Music in the Round, Yorkshire Artspace and Third Angel.

Sheffield Council backed the bids of Museums Sheffield, Sheffield Theatres and the Site Gallery with an offer of annual three-year funding.

Coun Isobel Bowler, Sheffield Council’s cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure said: “I’m delighted a number of the city’s arts organisations have received major grant awards.

“Total Arts Council funding in the city amounts to £9.6m, which includes an additional £2m over and above the previous funding level.

“This is not only great news for the arts in Sheffield, but also a further boost for the economy and our reputation as a vibrant city.”

Leader of Sheffield Council, Coun Julie Dore, added: “This package of funding from Arts Council England for such a wide range of our cultural institutions and organisations is excellent news for Sheffield.”

Pete Massey, from the Arts Council, said: “This is an exciting time for culture in Sheffield.
“We are delighted to be able to increase our investment in the city which is in response to the quality and ambition of resident museum and arts organisations.

“The council values culture and the role it can play for the community and the economy and has maintained its commitment, despite hard economic times.”
