'How I fell in love with a Sheffield man - and his city of nature, independents and great people too'

Jo Gawthorpe, at the age of 43, was seven months pregnant with her son when she was made redundant and then lost her mum suddenly.

Jo and Alex meditating in Peaks.

It was at that moment she turned to meditation. She had meditated on and off during her hectic career in corporate banking so appreciated the calming benefits but at that particular moment in her life needed it more than ever before. The benefits she experienced provided her with the desire and motivation to help others so she set up her meditation and mindfulness coaching business known as calmrMe – A Modern Way to Meditate.

Jo offers meditation and mindfulness programmes to help people who find themselves ‘stuck’ in life, who are struggling to deal with stress, anxiety, poor sleep, low self-esteem, or who simply want to be happy or maybe want to improve their performance.

“I am lucky because I absolutely love what I do and I get great pleasure and satisfaction helping people overcome problems and challenges and lead a happier and more content life”

Pip the dog.

It was a Yorkshire man coupled with work in corporate banking that brought Jo from The Midlands to Sheffield in 2001. She lives in the beautiful Rivelin Valley with her husband Paul, 12-year old son Alex and their spoiled rotten Staffordshire Bullterrier, Pip. She not only fell in love with a Yorkshire man but also with Sheffield...

I was first introduced to Henderson’s Relish by my then boyfriend at The Swan Pub in Ridgeway where he ordered me one of their delicious homemade pies and proudly brought it to me with a bottle of ‘the good stuff’ and so another love affair started! I defy any Sheffielder not to be blown away by a homemade pie with Hendo’s at The Swan.

I also love the buzz and independent shops, cafes, restaurants and bars that you can find at Ecclesall Road and Hunters Bar. Whatever city I am in, one of my favourite pastimes is to sit and people watch and the great cafés here mean you are always spoilt for choice. One of my favourite vegan cafes is Pom Kitchen and I love nothing better to sit with a Chai latte and a slice of something delicious and watch the world go by.

I was lucky enough to get a drink in the new bar Society, which could not have opened at a worst time, in March 2020 but I’m looking forward to going back there soon and enjoy a few cocktails. It’s not easy to set up a new business, especially just before a pandemic and feel it is important to support new and independent businesses in Sheffield and I try to do this whenever I can.

We are spoiled because we live across the road from the woods of the Rivelin Valley and I am so lucky to be just ten minutes from town but also just ten minutes from the Peak District! That’s one of the great things about Sheffield, some people think ‘Steel City’ but the image of industry and chimneys could not be further from the reality of the stunning countryside and tree lined streets this city has in fantastic abundance. We love taking Pip on long walks off the beaten track. Our favourite walk starts and ends at The Millstone Pub just outside Hathersage which takes you on a four mile walk with wonderful views along the River Derwent. We love making a day of it and usually finish by going in to The Millstone where we have always found a warm welcome and great food.

I have made some great friends since living in Sheffield. I find that Yorkshire people are so down to earth and easy to get on with. I love taking the time to chat with people in shops, and cafes and whilst out walking and ‘does tha know’ I am slowly losing my West Midlands accent!

Of course I enjoy a little yoga and love the cool urban vibe of R1se Yoga at Kelham Island. Chris and Jen are so down to earth and have a superb variety of classes. I am collaborating with them on a retreat at the luxurious Cattle Shed in Grindleford, which we are very excited about. I am also looking forward to being involved in the opening of their new studio R1se at Brook Place, Sharrow, in June.
