VIDEO: Sheffield DocFest plea to Martin Scorsese

Gangster films maker Martin Scorsese has been made an offer fans hope he can’t refuse – to Skype them in Sheffield, writes Graham Walker.

The Oscar winning Hollywood director, whose films include Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and The Wolf of Wall Street, has agreed to the world premiere of his latest project at Sheffield DocFest.

The 50 Year Argument, his acclaimed new documentary, charts how the journal, The New York Review of Books, has reflected American culture since its launch in 1963.

There will be a screening on Saturday, June 7, 1.30pm and Monday, June 9, 9.30pm, at The Showroom Cinema.

Scorsese, aged 71, is unable to attend in person - but biggest fan Hussain Currimbhoy, DocFest’s Director of Programming, is still hoping he can get the great man to address the festival by video call.

In a direct video appeal - watch it on The Star web site at - Hussain says: “Marty, if you’re watching....15 minutes of your time wouldn’t hurt.

“The magic of Skype is something we need to embrace together. And I think this city would be on its knees to have you on Skype during the Q&A of your film.

“If 15 minutes of your time can be had, trust me, it won’t kill ya, it’ll make you stronger.”

He added: “He’s a very busy guy. You can’t make Wolf Of Wall Street overnight. He works hard to do his films very well. That means he can’t come this year. But I’m very close to having him on Skype.”

Hussain explained how he managed to get the world premiere, which will be screened at Showroom Cinema tomorrow, Saturday, June 7, at 1.30pm, then Monday, June 9, 9.30pm.

He said: “By some act of God, after a lot or pursuing, we got the world premiere of his new film, that he’s made with David Tedeschi.

“I thought it was a clerical error. But it’s true.

“He and his team were enthusiastic about showing his film here because they know it will resonate in this city, in the context of documentary
