The 12A film tells how enormous alien monsters, the Kaiju, rise from a portal beneath the ocean, hell-bent on destroying the planet.
Earthlings fight back by developing vast 2,500 tonne robots called Jaegers.
Each is controlled by two pilots acting in unison in the film by Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro, inspired by Japan’s Toho studio, creators of the Godzilla movies.
The battling robots have landed at Cineworld Sheffield with two giant-sized posters, made especially for the cinema, hanging on the walls outside the entrance.
Andy Meakin, the cinema’s Operations Manager, said: “We’ve gone really huge with two monstrous banners outside the cinema - it’s also on the biggest screen in the area, our IMAX theatre, plus other screens.
“This is a film I’ve been waiitng for since it was first talked about years ago. It’s giant monsters, giant robots and a great director. I can’t get excited enough for this film. We’re expecting a very busy opening weekend.”
