There’s a new way to boast your love for Sheffield’s one and only Henderson’s Relish – and it goes quite nicely with a pint, too.

The team behind the Steel City’s favourite sauce are hitting the shelves this week with a new snack to rival the crisp market.

‘Hendo’s’ is a soya and potato bagged treat flavoured with the unmistakable spicy taste of Sheffield’s beloved relish.

The snack debuted this week – and, for now, you can only get it in Sheffield.

“Why would we want to launch it anywhere else?” said Henderson’s general manager Matt Davies.

“In many ways the company and the product is owned by Sheffield. People are very very proud of Henderson’s.

“It’s spicy, it’s got that taste of Henderson’s and we’re really proud of what we’ve come up with. It’s unique, really.”

Fans may remember a past snack exclusive to Sheffield in the form of Henderson’s Crisps, which came to an end three years ago when the company decided they were ready to launch their own product.

The new Hendo’s are seasoned with the relish’s distinct flavour and are vegan, gluten free and made with less oil and fats than traditional crisps.

Mr Davies says the launch comes after three years in the kitchen, in which time the relish has seen some of its largest ever growth in its 137 year history.

He said: “For many many years, we were a local or at best regional product. Over the past five years we’ve become increasingly well known and distributed nationwide. Now we’re selling in supermarkets across the country and even have a growing market in Asia.

"Even as we’re growing across the country, the bulk of our customers are in Sheffield and that’s how we like it.

“I and the team are very proud of this finished product and I think people are going to like it.”

Hendo’s will be sold in single portion 23g bags, which bosses say are ideal for Sheffield pack ups.

Henderson’s is asking that local retailers, food outlets, and licensed premises wanting to stock the new Hendo's contact them via email, at [email protected].

Deliveries to trade customers will be made daily.

Mr Davies added: “Hendo’s should be available widely around the city soon, but if members of the public can’t find them, you can order them for delivery only via our website, www.hendersonsrelish.com. However, you’ll need to order a full case of 24, enough for the first week, at least.”

Henry Henderson blended the first batch of his famous Relish in 1885.

More than 130 years later, it’s still made in Sheffield to a secret family recipe – a blend including tamarinds, cayenne peppers, vinegar, garlic and cloves.

Henderson’s Relish is splashed on almost any dish, from pies and stews to all kinds of meat, fish, and vegetables. Find out more about the special Steel City sauce here www.hendersonsrelish.com.

It comes as the iconic former factory of Henderson’s Relish, on Leavygreave Road, is under renovation to open as a cafe.
