Sheffield Westbourne School students tackle classic musical West Side Story

For many theatre lovers it is the world’s greatest musical - and for pupils at Sheffield’s Westbourne School it is about to be their greatest stage challenge ever.

The Broomhill independent school is already well known for staging a whole range of acclaimed musicals including Grease, Oliver, Bugsy Malone, The Wizard of Oz, Legally Blonde, 13 and Little Shop of Horrors.

But now they are set to present one of the giants of Broadway, West End and Hollywood with their production of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s legendary West Side Story.

Ther story was inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with a plot transposed from Renaissance Verona to 1950s New York and the tough world of warring street gangs.

West Side Story features a long line of hits including Maria, Something’s Coming, Somewhere, America, I Feel Pretty, One Hand On Heart and Tonight.

The production, which is open to members of the public, will take to the stage at Sheffield’s Montgomery Theatre on March 19 and 20.
