What's on: Poetry in the Garden

Internationally reknowned poet Jackie Kay is you give an inspiring performance of some of her poetry in the therapeutic Healing Garden at Station House Wortley between Sheffield and Barnsley on July 15.

Hailing from Scotland, but now living in Manchester, Jackie is a poet, playwright and novelist and has gained numerous accolades for her work.

Her exceptional contributions in these areas have earned her widespread recognition, including in 2006 an MBE and in 2021 a CBE - both of which are for Services to Literature.

She has a very warm personality, a delightful sense of humour is a gifted performer of her work, having, in her younger days studied Drama.

From 2016 to 2021 Jacikie was the Makar (Poet Laureate) of Scotland and her poetry is studied there as part of the School Curriculum.

Her work constantly explores questions of personal, racial and sexual identity and considers the wider applications of multiculturalism and gender confusion.

From 2015 to 2022 Jackie was Chancellor of the University of Salford. Currently she is Professor of Creative Writing at Newcastle University and Culteral Fellow at Glasgow Caledonian University.

The delightful Naturenature Healing Garden near Wortley, between Barnsley and Sheffield is the setting for two Poetry Reading Sessions Jackie is doing in our area. These are on July 15 at the Nurturenature Healing Garden Station House on Finkle Street Lane Wortley.

This is a beautiful garden created by its owner, Helena Davies, as a therapeutic garden when she was forcible retired, because of ill health, from her post as Senior Consultant at the Children's Hospital in Sheffield.

As Helena is a wheel chair user the Garden is wheel chair accessible and the poetry reading will be given in a marquee on one of the garden lawns.

The garden has regular and plant for sale and these will be available on the poetry day. Access is also available any day by appointment, via a phone call to07831505624 .

There are still a few places left for the poetry session from 4 to 5 pm £10 but early booking is essential as an earlier session is now sold out.
