Regenerating economy is a work of art

Master Cutler Alan Reid has launched an initiative aimed at promoting economic regeneration through the arts.

He is hosting a conference at the Cutlers’ Hall in September which will look at how arts developments and events can bring in cash and investment and improve the image of areas hit by industrial decline.

The free, one-day conference, is being backed by Renaissance South Yorkshire and will include speakers recognised nationally and regionally as experts in their field.

Speakers will include Prof John Holden from City University and the think tank Demos, and Prof Dominic Shellard, chairman of the Sheffield Theatres Trust.

Salford City Council leader John Merry will look at how the arts helped to transform Salford, through the creation of the Lowry Centre and the relocation of BBC Radio 5, sports and children’s TV.

Other speakers include Sir Hugh Sykes, chairman of renaissance South Yorkshire and the Sheffield Galleries and Museums Trust; Sheffield City Council chief executive Sir Bob Kerslake; and Terry Hodgkinson, chairman of regional development agency Yorkshire Forward.

The Master Cutler’s Conference on the Arts and Regeneration is in the Cutlers’ Hall on Thursday September 27.
