Sheffield could feature in Shanghai British Pavilion

SHEFFIELD could be one of the cities featured at the Shanghai World Expo 2010 if a design team led by award-winning architects John McAslan + Partners wins a competition to design the British Pavilion.

McAslan heads a team called 'Eight' which brings together talented designers from leading architects Brisac Gonzalez, Carmody Groarke, Nord Architects, Project Orange and Surface Architects; world famous engineers, Arup and exhibition specialists, Wordsearch.

"Sheffield was a must for its industrial and cultural heritage, its location as a gateway to the Peak District, architecture, and contribution to our contemporary music scene," said McAslan director Hannah Lawson.

"Over 70 million people will visit the Expo during 2010, with up to 50,000 visitors per day expected to visit the British Pavilion. The Sheffield area represents a crucial element of British urban and cultural history. We call our pavilion the Ribbon of Culture, and it would be a terrific opportunity for the city to use it to set up cultural and commercial dialogues in Shanghai.

"Our pavilion design presents eight can-do British cities to China's ultimate can-do city in a highly engaging way."
