Schools across Sheffield and South Yorkshire have announced positive Covid-19 cases since they re-opened after coronavirus closures and the summer break.

“Every school and case is different and so advice and guidance to schools is provided on an individual basis.”

"This depends on how many contacts that a person with COVID-19 has as well as the duration of contact."

Most schools have set up ‘bubbles’ of children and staff, with contact with other bubbles limited in a bid to reduce the transmission of Covid-19.

Andrew Jones added: “Schools are experiencing issues with the current shortage of testing appointments available but we are working with them closely to help children and staff access these.

"Throughout we have been taking advice from Public Health England on how we can best support the school and staff to allow children to continue to attend safely."

“As a reminder, we urge people to book a test if they have symptoms of Covid-19 which are; a high temperature, a new, continuous cough or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste.

“If you have symptoms you must self-isolate at home and only leave your home to get a test.”

Sheffield was placed on the Government’s coronavirus watchlist last week as the number of confirmed cases in the city continues to rise.

Nationally Coronavirus testing labs are said to be struggling under the pressure of surging demand for swabs.

The surge in demand has also led to local shortages, with many people reporting problems with getting online bookings and being directed to test sites hundreds of miles from their homes.

Two coronavirus testing sites in Sheffield have closed for walk-ins amid a capacity shortage in laboratories to process tests. Sheffield City Council confirmed testing sites in Sharrow and Darnall have switched to appointment only
