More than 90 per cent of people aged 45 and above now vaccinated in Sheffield, new figures reveal

206,742 people aged 45 or over in the city have now received their first dose of one of the three Covid vaccines now available, or 90.7 per cent of the total population in that age group.

The figures are based on provisional data from NHS England for vaccinations up to April 18, and use population figures from the Office for National Statistics – which are the best publicly available official estimates.

The figures put Sheffield comfortably in the top half of the list of English local authorities, underscoring how well the vaccination rollout is going in the city.

The local authority with the highest percentage of over 45s vaccinated is Warwick with 96.8 per cent while the local authority with the lowest percentage of over 45s vaccinated is Westminster with 63.4 per cent.

Alun Windle, chief nurse and vaccination lead at Sheffield’s NHS clinical commissioning group (CCG), said: “Sheffield’s vaccination programme continues to go from strength to strength. Every person in the city who’s in the highest priority groups, have been invited. So far, over 267,000 people have received their first dose of a COVID and we have given second doses to 84,000 people.

“Most of the vaccination supply in April will be needed for second doses or first doses for those in the priority groups (people over 50 and those with clinically vulnerable), however, last week the government announced that healthy adults aged 45-49 are now being invited for a vaccine.

“People in this age group will be invited by either the national booking system or a GP practice. This is a large group of people so will take time to vaccinate them. Please don’t contact the NHS about an appointment, when there’s supply, the NHS will contact you.”

The vaccination programme began in December when the first Pfizer jabs were rolled out in the city.

This was followed by the AstraZeneca vaccine in January and earlier this month, the first patients to get the Moderna vaccine in Sheffield began getting their jabs.
