Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced yesterday that the UK was ramping up its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with people urged to avoid pubs, cinemas, restaurants, theatres, bars and clubs to restrict the spread of the disease.

But the Government has yet to impose restrictions on the opening of such venues or to announce any significant support for the many businesses and employees affected.

The Great Gatsby on Division Street responded with dismay to the announcement.

“So don’t come to bars and clubs but don’t offer us any support or help to keep the businesses going or to pay wages?” it tweeted.

“Nice one Boris. Thrown us under the bus because you don’t want the Government to pay for people’s sick pay.”

The Queens Head pub in High Green, meanwhile, says it will remain open until the Government orders the compulsory closure of such establishments.

“As a small independent business, we have to remain open to maintain some resemblance of cash flow and to provide a wage to our great team,” it said in a Facebook update.

“We have stepped up our cleaning schedules to clean all door handles and push plates at regular intervals. We have alcohol hand cleaner behind the bar for our staff and any customers on request.”
