Sitting in McDonald's, visiting the pub and seeing family - the things Sheffield residents are most looking forward to when restrictions ease on May 17

Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke at a televised press conference on Monday in which he gave the green light for the third step of the roadmap plan out of lockdown to commence.

Under Step three of the lockdown roadmap, "all but the most high-risk sectors will be able to reopen" as of May 17, as the UK's Covid alert level was downgraded from 4 to 3.

The news means people will be allowed to eat and drink indoors at pubs and restaurants, and cinemas will be able to open once again for film screenings.

From Monday, gatherings inside homes are allowed once again, with a limit of up to six people or groups from a maximum of two households, and up to 30 people will legally be allowed to gather outdoors.

As part of the next step beginning on May 17, people will be given a choice to remain two metres from family or friends, meaning they can once again hug and shake hands.

The Prime Minister thanked the nation for the "sacrifice" made during the lockdown but warned that this does not mean “we can suddenly throw caution to the winds.”

Mr Johnson said: “In fact, more than a year into this pandemic, we all know that close contact, such as hugging, is a direct way of transmitting this disease.

“So I urge you to think about the vulnerability of your loved ones – whether they have had a vaccine, one or two doses, and whether there has been time for that vaccine to take effect.

“Remember outdoors is always safer than indoors. And if you are meeting indoors, remember to open a window and let in the fresh air.”

The news has come as a relief to many who are hoping to get their freedom back as well as social contact with family and friends.

People in Sheffield have now had their say regarding the recent news and have revealed what they are most looking forward to doing from Monday.

Tracy Hatfield said that she is most looking forward to sitting down in McDonalds instead of sitting in the bus shelter and is also going to sit down in the Sheffield moor cafe, in the warmth.

Jenny Pickerill believes that now is not the time to start easing restrictions and has urged everyone to remain cautious; she said: “Please let's remain cautious and careful. New Covid variants are quickly spreading in the UK; many people are not yet vaccinated. Now is not the time to ease all restrictions. Keep wearing masks, keep social distancing, and keep washing hands.”

Jean Hepplestone said that she was finally looking forward to being able to sit inside a pub for a meal and a few drinks.”
