The City fan, from Manchester, was off work and supposed to be in self-isolation after returning home from a trip to Italy last week.

Because of the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Italy, he agreed with his bosses to self-isolate for 14 days, as per Public Health England guidelines.

He is not believed to have coronavirus but was supposed to be self-isolating as a precaution.

Sheffield Wednesday was tipped off in advance that the Man City fan was planning to go to the game at Hillsborough, and when he tried to enter he ground he was denied access.

It is understood that a police officer was at the gate as a precaution.

Sheffield Wednesday said: “The club were made aware of a potential incident on Wednesday evening and the individual concerned was immediately prevented from entering the stadium.

“Working alongside all relevant agencies and following government and NHS guidelines to the letter, the situation was swiftly resolved.

“We can confirm this person was found to present zero risk to any party inside or outside the stadium.”

A work colleague said: “He may not have coronavirus, who knows, but when he was off work self-isolating he showed a complete and utter disregard for the safety of others by trying to get into a football stadium where he knew there would be large crowds.

“Sheffield Wednesday did the right thing.”
