We all know that the price of one of the nation’s favourite meals, fish & chips, has gone up due to rising energy and fish bills – but the owner of a premier fish and chip shop in Sheffield is making it his business to keep the dish affordable and the Great British tradition alive.

It’s not surprising that Richard Pearce, the owner of FryMaster, on Attercliffe Road, is leading the way for fish & chips shop owners to follow.

He was born in the family home over his parent’s fish & chip shop further along Attercliffe Road and by the age of 16, had left school and was frying fish himself.

He explains: “For my family, fish & chips began back in the 1930s. It was Great Aunt Eliza who came to Sheffield and opened our family’s first fish & chips shop, using a combination of Lincolnshire potatoes, Icelandic cod and beef dripping, together with a special recipe batter which has been passed down through the family, from generation to generation.

“I am proud to say that we still cook our fish & chips the same way that Great Aunt Eliza did all those years ago, helping to keep it a great family tradition.”

Keeping the nation’s favourite affordable

While Richard’s energy bills are rising from £400 a month to an eye-watering £1,200, he is determined to keep his fish & chips affordable for customers and not pass that on.

He adds: “While costs are going up, I am trying to keep my prices as low as possible. I want the nation’s favourite meal to stay affordable when people are feeling the pinch.

“We are a traditional fish & chip shop. We do what we know and we do it well.”

So fish & chips takeaway from FryMaster will still cost only £5.40, just a 25p increase.

Or you can choose the fast and friendly service in FryMaster’s 70-seat restaurant, with free parking close by, wheelchair access, free WiFi and air conditioning. Party bookings are also welcome.

Order online

Richard offers an online ordering service to make collecting your takeaway quicker and more convenient.

He is also keen to help local good causes and this year’s 10p carrier bag charge, introduced under Government guidelines, will be donated to De Hood Boxing Centre & Community Hub and other local community projects.

Richard says: “I am the youngest of six children and we joked that dad had a big family because he wanted lots of fish & chip shops. We are all fish fryers and two of my sisters also run their own fish & chip shops in Sheffield.”

What customers say

“I have been a regular here for years, since before they moved just up the road. Simply put - the best chippy we’ve ever been to. Just can’t be beaten.”

“I have become quite a regular at this fish restaurant after being recommended by a family member and the fact that I am local. I have to say I am never disappointed with the quality of food, perfectly batted fish and fluffy chips, the portions can come quite large so you have to ask for a kids portion if you want a small, overall brilliant food, fast service with a smile, excellent!

This is the best fish and chip shop/restaurant ever.”

“Lovely food, smashing staff and decor. Keep up the good work. We have used this place for years and it is consistently marvellous!”
