Celebrating dog-friendly businesses in Sheffield

Brandon Egley - and his labrador Eddie – are behind DogFriendlySheffield.co.uk, a website dedicated to celebrating dog-friendly businesses in Sheffield.Sheffield has truly started to celebrate its outdoor credentials, and now staking a claim as one of Britain’s top craft beer cities and, in Brandon’s eyes, somewhere in the middle of those two hobbies sit dog owners. As a dog owner, he often takes Eddie out with him and found himself frustrated there was no easy way to find out which places would allow dogs inside, without going in and asking – and that inspired Dog-friendly Sheffield. He has curated lists of dog-friendly pubs, restaurants, cafes and even shops based on suggestions from Sheffield’s dog owners and businesses themselves. He says: “As Sheffielders we’re known for supporting our own, and you’ll often find that dog-friendly bars, cafes, and pubs will be independent businesses all offering something a little different.”

DOG FRIENDLY BREWERY – Triple Point Brewery & Bar, Shoreham Street

Dog friendly doesn’t just mean allowing dogs inside your venue, when the staff are genuinely happy to see dogs it always makes you feel that little better about being there. Our first visit to Triple Point saw Eddie get plenty of fusses, treats and a water bowl. When we came back a second time the first thing they asked us was ‘Where’s Eddie?’ Triple Point is arguably my dog’s local even more than my own. Great priced beer with ever-changing taps for the beer fans. A pint of golden ale for £2.50 some days, you can’t say fairer than that in the city centre.

DOG FRIENDLY BAR – BrewDog, Division Street

BrewDog is one of the few chain bars that make the effort to welcome dogs. Not only is there a vast selection of craft beer and awesome pizzas for humans, they even have a Subwoofer beer for dogs. The staff in BrewDog Sheffield are friendly and knowledgeable. Every third Sunday of the month they host their ‘Hair of the Dog’ event where visiting dogs can get free dog beers and treats.

DOG FRIENDLY PUB - The Crown, Heeley

When we first moved near to the city centre, Heeley was a real haven for us with Eddie. There are a good number of dog-friendly spots for a little pub crawl during the day including Brothers Arms, Sheaf View, Pour, Tramshed and a few cafes. The Crown is our pick of the lot though. It has a lovely beer garden and a cosy inside, so it’s ideal all year round. They even have a little ‘dog bar’ with treats, dog beers and pawsecco for your pooch. The owners are dog owners themselves, so there’s always a warm welcome.

Dog Friendly Cafe - Wildwood Coffee Shop, The Moor

Wildwood was one of those places I only discovered after making the website. A little cafe and gift shop off to the right when you get the bottom of The Moor. They serve up tasty sub sandwiches, coffees, teas, smoothies as well as French toast to die for. The whole place is decorated in a woodland theme, it’s a cosy nook to take some time out.

Dog Friendly Restaurant - Nether Edge Pizza Company, Abbeydale Road

Abbeydale Road is another hive of dog-friendly spots with plenty of bars and cafes cropping up seemingly all the time. Among them all you’ll find Nether Edge Pizza Company cooking up arguably some of the best woodfire pizzas in the city, and if they’re not too busy they’ll allow your dog in as well.

Dog Friendly Day Out - Sheffield F.C, Dronfield

If you’re looking for something a little different for a day out, non-league football grounds are often welcoming of dogs. We hop on the train to Dronfield and check out some of the local dog-friendly pubs in the area (there are a few!) before heading up to ‘The home of football’. It’s under a tenner to get in, and it’s got a Thornbridge pub (Coach and Horses) built onto the ground, plus you can drink while you and your four legged friend watch the game. What’s not to love? For those on the other side of the city, Hallam F.C. games are also dog friendly. There are so many great dog-friendly spots waiting to be discovered in Sheffield, and this is just a small selection of them. In 2020 we hope to get out and try even more.
