100-year-old Henderson's Relish bottle hidden in Sheffield garden wall found by builder

The solid black glass bottle, which experts believe dates back to around the time of the First World War, was unearthed by a builder carrying out repair work on a dry stone wall in Greystones.

And Stuart Parkinson, the man who found it says he's proud to have uncovered a bit of Sheffield's history in the strangest of places and is planning to hang on to his find.

He said: "I was doing some work on the wall when I spotted it. I didn't think too much of it at first but then I saw the Henderson's name on it and realised what it was.

"I was quite taken aback and the interest in it has been amazing."

Mr Parkinson, 39, was carrying out restoration to a wall outside his home in Greystones Road when he made the find.

He said: "Some shrubbery had started to overgrow and cause damage to the wall, so I took it apart and rebuilt it and that's when I found it. I like to imagine that whoever put it there had perhaps but it down while having their lunch and forgot about it or a secret stash they kept hidden."

Unfortunately, the bottle was empty - but that hasn't stopped a rush of Hendo's fans hankering after it after the photo was posted on the company's Facebook page.

"I've shown it to Henderson's and they are interested in it and my hairdresser offered me £50 on the spot for it," added Stuart. "Other than a small crack, it is pretty much intact."

"I am keeping hold of it though for now," he said. "It has sentimental value because it has been stuck in the wall of our home for all that time. It was quite exciting to find something like that after all these years."

A spokesman for Henderson's has confirmed that the bottle is approximately 100 years old.

The city's favourite spicy sauce dates from 1885 and was first manufactured by Henry Henderson and until its move into new premises in 2013, the condiment was famously bottled at the Leavygreave Road factory for decades with the works becoming a Sheffield institution.
