Amy honoured for community work

Amy Cooper, who opened Onboard Skatepark in Little London Road in 2012, was presented with a High Sheriff’s Award by South Yorkshire’s High Sheriff John Holt.

The award honours ‘people and projects across South Yorkshire that have made their local community a better place or changed the lives of others.’

Mr Holt said: “I have seen first hand how Amy and her team help young people fulfil their potential and improve their lives, growing in confidence and self-esteem, and learning essential life skills.

“I chose to honour Amy because of her inspirational qualities, her leadership and her passion for this fine work.”

Onboard Skatepark has grown from an activity hub for children and young people to engage in sports and recreation, and is now also a safe environment for some of Sheffield’s most vulnerable and disengaged young people. The indoor park provides a safe space for people with BMX, scooters and skateboards, as well as those wishing to try their hand at parkour, street art and photography.

Amy, who launched the skate park in memory of her father, said: “The skatepark has become a way of life for my family and I, and I’m absolutely knocked out and thrilled with the award.

“This is a wonderful tribute to all the amazing people who work here and volunteer their time – we are entirely dependent on their goodwill and commitment.

“Hopefully we can use this award to expand our services.”
