An a-mazing recovery

JUST one month ago it looked as though the Cawthorne living maze near Barnsley might never open to the public after torrential rain left it waterlogged.

But now the ground has dried out and visitors are already getting lost in the middle of the maize.

Farmer Sarah Jowett said: “Last month we didn’t know whether we would have a Maize Maze this year as we were flooded so badly the field looked more like the canals of Venice.

“Last week we still couldn’t get going because of all the rain, but now the crop is in its “amazing phase” with all the sunshine and growing over a foot a week. Most of the crop is 6ft, with the rest recovering in the glorious sun.”
