£4.5million project under way to redevelop Barnsley town

Developers Resilienti and Barnsley Council have announced plans to build a new supermarket and shops, ‘re-model’ the Town Hall and install kiosks on the High Street.

The market will be relocated to a new site on Southgate behind the Town Hall and will have improved facilities.

As part of the £4.5million project, expected to create scores of jobs, a 74-place car park has been built on the site of the former medical centre on Duke Street.

The plans are designed to complement the existing landmark Hoyland Centre which provides modern office space for Barnsley Council staff and includes a GP practice, pharmacy, community nursing services, a library and learning centre and café.

Kerrie Whiteley, managing director of Lincolnshire-based Resilienti, said: “After many years of meticulous planning and consultations with local residents and workers, it is fantastic to see work get under way on this major project which will transform Hoyland.

“The first phase of the project to create a new car park for the town centre is almost complete and we have now started remediation work on the new market site ready for opening late in spring. The facilities will be a huge improvement to those offered by the current market, with some small retail and office space still available.

“This major investment signifies the start of a new chapter for the town.

“Attracting new retail will not only create significant employment opportunities but drive economic growth and revitalise Hoyland. ”
