KEVIN and Lynsey Gaskell are looking for a former customer of the long closed Hillsborough Inn to officially open their new mortgage advice shop at Hillsborough Corner.

The old pub site has been rundown in recent years but the couple, who used to run the Cavendish on West Street, are hoping they can kickstart the area's revival.

"Perhaps Richard Hawley will name his new album Hillsborough Corner," jokes Kevin, who promises to take his guest for a free pint.

Call him on 0780 316 6461.

The new business, Mortgage Quest, opens on October 24.

AUTHOR JP Bean was taken aback when one of his audience at a talk on Sheffield's crime produced a cosh! But he wasn't in any danger.

"One of the granddaughters of the Mooney Gang brought along a 'life preserver' as they used to call it," he says.

For his next talk in the series, at the Police and Fire Museum, West Bar, on Tuesday October 23, he'll be looking at local hangings and bringing along James Morton, who ghosted the autobiography of Mad Frankie Frazer.

"This is my alternative to Off The Shelf," he jokes.

Tickets cost 4 on 0114 249 1999.

A COLLEAGUE spotted this in a shop window of a Polish-owned shop in Berwick, Northumberland - "British Welcome".
