Aston backs Eagles side

SHEFFIELD Eagles boss Mark Aston has given his squad a vote of confidence by not making a move before the transfer deadline, despite rumours of a bid for a back-row forward.

The deadline came and went on Friday as the Eagles were crushing Batley Bulldogs 56-24, for their biggest win of the season.

"I've got confidence in the squad. We've got players coming back from injury and we're looking good," said Aston.

Even the loss of top points scorer full-back Johnny Woodcock and in-form centre Damien Reid for the Batley game didn't disrupt the winning run.

Winger Rob Worrincy took the number one shirt, scored a try and, in spite of a couple of moments of defensive uncertainty, coped well. The experienced Richard Newlove came in at centre and also claimed a touchdown.

Aston said: "Damien Reid missed out because of flu but we could bring in Richard Newlove and Johnny Woodcock was injured but Rob Worrincy took over.

"Rob played 80 minutes in an unfamiliar role of full-back where there's a lot more work to do than on the wing."

Aston can also point to a second successful comeback game for forward Ged Corcoran who has moved up to the front row.

Brendon Lindsay came off the bench - after missing the win over Leigh - and looked back to his best.

Centre or back-rower Neil Law is back in full training after a leg injury and could come in for the trip to Castleford on Sunday.

Aston has also allowed three players to got out on loan - John Crawford and Zac Hill to Keighley and Caldon Bravo to Hunslet.

Meanwhile, against Batley for the second game running an Eagles' player claimed four tries.

Former Doncaster winger Danny Mills equally the tally by centre James Ford against Leigh.

"It's nice for Danny Mills to get a few tries and that gives him a confidence boost," said Aston. "Scoring four tries is special for any player."
