Bakewell Show a record breaker

BAKEWELL Show organisers are "cautiously optimistic" that this year's event has broken all previous records.

Yesterday's warm weather brought thousands of visitors through the gates and today looks set to be just as successful.

Official figures cannot be confirmed for a couple of weeks but organisers say that record amounts of tickets were sold on the door yesterday.

"We are cautiously optimistic that yesterday was a record Wednesday," said Janet Bailey, show manager.

"We took more on the gates yesterday than we did on the Wednesday in 2005 and that was a record year, though our fingers are crossed. It will be a few weeks before we can confirm all the sales from advance tickets but it is looking good."

The two-day event, which is celebrating its 177th year, is one of the few shows nationwide that has not been cancelled due to bad weather. It was so popular yesterday that some visitors queued in traffic for up to three hours.

"It is the first time for six or seven years that we have had a traffic problem," said Janet.

"But it is good news because they were all trying to get to us. This has never happened before but yesterday we had people coming into the office asking to buy tickets for today's event - they wanted a double dose. I'm really pleased to see so many people enjoying themselves."
