A bird strike was to blame for hundreds of homes suffering a power cut in a Sheffield suburb this morning.

Residents in Handsworth claimed to have heard the sound of an ‘explosion’ before their electricity went off, which Northern Powergrid said was due to a bird hitting a overhead cable.

The firm said a total of 1,779 homes were affected by the bird strike at 10.08am, with 1,115 back with power again within a couple of minutes.

The rest were all re-connected by 10.30am.
